"'And the music they played at those Cecil Street brams...by the time the
45s reached us here in Canada, all the music itself was like it was already
rubbed off! The records sticking and slipping and jerking. But I remember
Harry Belafonte. And "Day-O." And "Stack banana till the marning come!
Daylight come and me wan' go home..." Those were the days! Before I became
stupid and let 'that man' into my life. Before I even brought-back-up that
son o' mine after I got pregnant with him, that son o' mine, who now giving
me such hell...
'Those were the days!' she said, as if she was talking to the passengers.
All of them were sitting in the three rows of seats at the back of the
streetcar; and she figured they were men going home from a long day of
temporary, unskilled labour. But how did she know this? she asked herself.
She knew because she was once like them. That was what used to be called
'Canadian Experience.' Yes! She was sure that when they said 'You do not
have Canadian Experience,' they were using the code word for 'You black.'"

Idora Morrison has always done the best for her son. So the news that BJ’s become involved in gang crime is almost too much for her to take. After collapsing on the floor of her basement apartment, she spends the next four days in a state of shock, escaping into her memories. She recalls her deadbeat husband taking off on her and her young son. She experiences again the past twenty-five years of hard work and struggle, of constantly putting herself on the line to keep BJ safe. She relives in every moment what it truly means to be a single mother, displaced in a foreign land and doing whatever it takes to survive, in this powerfully emotional journey—all the way to its poignant, impactful and tragic conclusion.

I will say this so far. Ordered this book about a week or so ago and attempted to read. Became worried from the first sentence. Didn't get past the dream sequence before I put down. Am currently reading another book right now... My free time is highly limited so I have to be taken from the beginning. Book is just a little suspect right now. If/when I pick back up, hope to repost with a better review...

I have been trying to read this book now for about a month, and it does not hold my attention at all. I wish I waited until someone posted a review before ordering this one. Order at your own risk!!
