At half past one, the earlier fast-paced mood of the Funky Butt Dance Hall now coasted like a tired man dragging his feet. Scores of couples stepped lightly, embracing the moment and each other. While the night marched on, soft whispers drifted past the harmless belly rubbing and sweet-talking varieties. The witching hours were at hand. Hampton was surprised when Magnolia started up the kind of conversation he doubted she’d had previously. He laughed at her suggestion to sneak outside for a private dance in a dark, quiet place.
“So, how long are you going to treat me like I’m a child?” Magnolia asked, her feet following Hampton’s slow, methodical two-step groove. “Just because you treat me that way don’t make it so. I’m a woman, a grown woman.”
“You’s a grown woman, huh?” Hampton heckled quietly so as not to upset the mood. “Says who?” Magnolia moaned in a sensual manner as if she knew what it was supposed to sound like, then she slid her tongue into his mouth. There was something in the way she went about it that sent Hampton down a different path. After pulling his lips a few inches from hers, he wrinkled his brow. “Girl, you did that like you been practicing.”
“You think so? Well, you’d be surprised what all I rehearsed. We grow up pretty fast where I come from.”
“You keep talking that way, I might be inclined to believe you.”
Magnolia was bubbling on the inside. On her face, she wore a lusty leer to entice the man whose zipper she intended to be tied to. “Hampton, I’ve been meaning to ask you something. Those women fighting over you, what did you do to make both of them act out so?”
“Wasn’t nothing to it,” he answered modestly. “They’s just spouting off about something that happened between them. It likely didn’t concern me at all.”
“That one with thick hips, I overheard her in the restroom going on about you. She said how you made her simmer. How does that work, exactly?”
Hampton almost choked. “Why, uh...I didn’t do nothing but talk to her a few times.”
“Talked to her is all?” Magnolia asked with a yeah, right smirk. “If talking is what you call it, I might be persuaded to hear what you got to say firsthand.”

Victor McGlothin weaves an intricate tale about the bonds of family, the high price of deception—and murder. Hustlers Ivory “Bones” Arcineaux and Julian Bynote are living the high life in 1950s New Orleans, with all the fine women, good food and hot nights two men can possibly handle. Julian especially seems to have it all when he meets the beautiful, classy Magnolia Garbo. But when one of their simple robberies goes wrong and Julian bears witness to Bones murdering a man in cold blood, a white councilman no less—it could mean the end of life as they know it. Now with the police hot on their trail, Julian must decide whether rolling in the fast lane is worth losing his freedom, maybe even his life—and the only woman he ever loved.

Didn't think I'd like it from the beginning, but it was very good. You never knew what to expect. And the ending was a surprise.

"Interesting" secret(s) in Newberry. A few twists to the story. You were led to believe one thing, but in the end turned out to be different. I would definitely pass along to other readers. Another good story since Miss Fast Etta's House.

I found this to be a great story line, BUT it was very slow and took forever to get to the Point. I was in New Orleans and felt that I truly knew the characters but just way too slow

This is my first time reading this author's work but I must say that I was pleasantly surprised! I usually read urban fiction but the synopsis on the back cover drew me in! The details of back in the day New Orleans made you feel like you were there. The trials and adventures of Bones and Julian AKA Swagger, kept me reading. It was an easy read and it had enough twists to keep it interesting!
