Eight-year-old Kamil Benson is a good kid, living in a lovely brownstone in Brooklyn’s Bed-Stuy neighborhood. His life changes suddenly when his mother walks out on his cheating father, takes her four kids, and moves in with her mother in a New Jersey housing project. It’s a rough new home, but Kamil and his brother, Kamal, find some other kids who aim to stay in school and grow up clean.
But life doesn’t always turn out according to plan. Money is a lot tighter than it used to be; and as Kamil grows through his teens, he faces all the temptations of the ‘hood—temptations he’s not always able to resist. What begins as adolescent fun turns into addiction and violence, as Kamil sets out on the same dark path his father followed.
