Being the cake lady down South is not unlike being an old-fashioned midwife: house calls at all hours and you have to deliver with a smile. In fact, one of these cake ladies is a midwife: Lisa Goldstein of Celo, North Carolina, whose carrot cake is a thing of beauty. Jodi Rhoden’s Cake Ladies is a thing of beauty, too—and not just because of all the pretty photos of good old- fashioned, from-scratch cakes. Here, 17 Southern bakers who wear the term “cake lady” with pride share stories of what and why they bake, talk about their years of kitchen wisdom and, of course, share their signature recipes, including the recipe for the cake that sold for $1,200 at a charity auction: Pearl Teeter’s heavenly Ten-Layer Chocolate Cake. Color photos.

I collect cookbooks and some of them I buy because I want to try new recipes within a certain cooking genre and some because I love the story they tell. This is the latter. There are wonderful cake recipes in this book (along with lovely pictures) but my favorite part was perusing the history behind each recipe and the baker who uses it. I found this book charming and heartfelt.

I was somewhat dissapointed with the number of cakes but they are a good selection. I make cakes myself and had hoped for a newer selection than the old standby's.
