“Avery studied her for a moment. Two things made him a good detective; one was his intuition he listened to it, and trusted it, and the other was his ability to judge character, right on, usually within minutes meeting a person. Miss Darden here surely had her [stuff] together, and Miss Lucy could’ve very well walked on water, but no person in her right mind could truly be that cool knowing that her mother abandoned her in the lobby of a hospital emergency room.
‘Tasha Darden is a name someone at social services picked out of a hat and gave to me. I need to know my real name, Mr. Avery.’
‘I can’t promise any miracles,’ he said, solemnly.
‘I don’t expect miracles,’ she said softly. But I do expect to be able to look into my own mother’s eyes at least once in my lifetime. I just want to know where I came from. I think she owes me that much. Don’t you?’”
